The Evil Eye is one of the oldest symbols known to man. It has some form in almost every culture and religion. Like other symbols in my work, I am fascinated how so much meaning and power can be applied to one representation. The Evil Eye is a symbol of protection. It is also a play on words, usually one says you are being given the "evil eye", ironically this is what these symbols and amulets are also called. It is meant to protect one from negative thoughts, feelings and malice. In many cultures it is believed eyes are the windows to the soul, that actual harm can be inflicted by them. The theory behind the Evil Eye as a protection symbol is, in the form of an eye, it can reflect these bad energies back on to the person thinking them and directing them. Amulets are either worn or placed in the home above entry ways. This symbol has a lot of meaning for me, like a cross for some, it give me great comfort. I love to make these on panel with an acrylic medium to add texture, all are unique. I never make one exactly the same.
